Everything you need to know about firewalking for charity

Can you handle the heat? If you’re looking for a unique way to raise money for charity, a firewalk might just be the adventure for you…

At Cabaret Vs Cancer, we fundraise a little differently. While we absolutely admire anyone who dedicates their time and energy to raising money for fantastic causes in classic ways, we personally like to add a bit of rebellion to our events. And firewalking offers just that.

If you’re thinking about firewalking for charity but want to learn more about what it entails, read on for everything you need to know.

What is firewalking?

Firewalking is essentially what it says on the tin: walking across fire. Well, more accurately, it’s the process of walking across burning embers. And it’s a whole lot of fun!

People take on the challenge of firewalking for a whole host of reasons, from team bonding to pure empowerment. It can be an exercise in focusing the mind and achieving things you didn’t think possible.

For us, firewalking is a great way to get out of our comfort zones, raise awareness of our cause, and bring in some all-important donations to help us deliver more grants to cancer support charities across the UK.

How does a firewalk work?

So, is it just a scramble across the flames? Not quite. Firewalking should always be facilitated by experts who have the training to keep all participants safe. We partner with Blaze, one of the top UK firewalk organisers.

They set up a 20-feet (6-metre) walkway laden with embers burning at a rather toasty 669℃ (1236℉). Participants are taken through a motivational session to prepare them for the walk itself.

After the motivational session, it’s time to walk the glowing runway one at a time — completely barefoot.

Why is firewalking a popular way to raise money for charity?

There are many varied and unique ways to raise money for charity (and as a small charitable organisation ourselves, we know just how much every penny is appreciated). But we must admit, some of the most effective ways to drum up some funding are to bring a bit of drama to the mix.

Walking across a path of burning coals showcases courage and offers an eye-catching spectacle. Usually taking place in the evening, just think how impressive those vibrant embers look against the dark night sky. Signing up to take part in this kind of activity tends to inspire friends, family members, social media followers, and supporters to donate to the cause.

Firewalking for charity also provides a wonderful opportunity to come together, support one another as each participant crosses the walkway, overcoming a fear as a community.

Plus, the sense of achievement once you reach the other side of the firewalk is unparalleled!

Why don't firewalkers burn their feet?

It’s important to note that firewalking is completely safe. It’s also far less painful than you might think. Some people wonder if it’s an illusion, but firewalking is very real — you really will be treading over burning embers.

But the reason it doesn’t hurt ultimately boils down to physics. The coal embers themselves are a fairly poor heat conductor, and they are covered in a layer of cooler ash that further insulates the heat. Combined with the fact that participants walk at a brisk, even pace, feet don’t have prolonged contact with the heat. And this means it can’t penetrate the skin and cause burns.

How many people can take part in a firewalk?

Technically, groups of any size can organise and take part in a firewalk. Many facilitators set minimum requirements (often 12 or 30 people), especially if the aim is to raise money for charity. This ensures there’s a good turnout on the day and covers the costs of putting the event on.

Who can take part?

Provided you are over 18, are in general good health, and can complete the walk unaided, almost everyone can take part in firewalking for charity. If you want to sign up for our upcoming firewalk in October but are unsure if it’s suitable for you, please don’t hesitate to reach out and we’ll answer any questions as best we can.

What happens during the motivational session?

Before the firewalking can take place, the expert facilitators will guide all participants through an hour-long session to help everyone get in the zone and feel ready for the walk itself. Don’t worry, there’s no hypnosis or brainwashing!

This session is designed to help you feel more confident, release fears, and break free from limiting beliefs. You’ll also be guided through the best way to walk across the embers to keep your feet safe.

Where is the Cabaret Vs Cancer charity firewalk taking place?

We’re thrilled to be hosting our third firewalk this autumn. On the 11th of October 2026, our brave participants will be shedding their shoes and firewalking for charity.

We’ll be meeting at Signature Brewery Blackhorse Road in East London (and yes, you’re very welcome to stay for a celebratory drink afterwards!)

If this sounds like your sort of fundraising and you want to support some incredible charities, find out more about FireWalk ‘26, and sign up today.
